Thanksgiving

We took a lot of photos this week of Dylan. We finally went up into the attic and looked through a big bag of clothes we have since he's outgrowing his newborn stuff now. We found the cutest stuff so we sort of played dress up... hehe. What a good sport he was about that.

We had a visit last weekend from Delmar and his girlfriend Amy. They're in the States traveling around in a pickup with a pop up camper and just driving around all over the place. Amy was wonderful & it was great to see Del again too. Most impressive factoid: she's training to run her first 26 mile marathon. That sorta blows my mind. Running just ain't my thing. Geez.

My stupid diet sort of worked to our advantage for once - we went out for Indian food the first night and made sushi at home the next. Yum! Lianna also had fun climbing on him like some sorta jungle gym. He didn't really do much to discourage that - except teach her some climbing moves to practice in the door frame, which she mastered a few days after they left & was rather proud of.

She's made me promise to take a short video of it, so I will have to post that soon. We went out for a chilly autumn walk through Freedom Park and I took a picture of Lianna's hair after we returned... holy mega-static!!! The photos really don't do it justice.

Thanksgiving was nice. We ate around 7pm - roast beef, not turkey. Nice change & much easier... For some reason Damon & I passed out promptly after dinner on the couch while Lianna watched Shrek the Third. And I thought turkey was supposed to make you sleepy! So after waiting all day until 7pm to call family & friends and wish them a Happy Thanksgiving, I passed out cold and didn't awake until midnight. Which is why I'm so wide awake now at 3am, blogging & editing photos. Oops. I really wanted to call everyone. You will have to be satisfied with blog + pix!

Love to all!

Super Dylan!

We dressed him in a blue bib like it was a cape and he rode around defending the city on my knees. Super Dylan - Defender of BABIES!!!

From people like this, I assume...

These are from about a week ago. He really enjoyed being nekkid in his bouncy chair. Even if he did pee himself about 60 seconds after I put him in it.

Nature Center Hike

Damon took Lianna to another nature center class about birds and then went out hiking and exploring with her this afternoon. They remembered to bring the camera this time and this is what they found....

Halloween

Lianna went as Darth Maul!

New Haircut

I snapped this one this afternoon as he was waking up from a nap.

And these two just now while they're both napping. And yes, the rumors are true... Damon cut off his damn lovely locks. I still miss em. But I like the new look too.

New Pix

Dylan is doing pretty well. A week ago we made the decision to have his tongue snipped and it seems to have helped us considerably with feeding issues. For example, in about two weeks time he gained almost 2 whole pounds! So he's now around 9.5 pounds, maybe even a bit more. He's also amazingly strong and has been holding up his own head and looking around at everything since day 10. I should be posting pix a lot more often now too since I finally found the stupid camera charger.

Lianna's doing well too. We finally started homeschooling again are slowly getting back into the swing of that. Yesterday we took Dylan out for his first walk in the stroller. It's really nice here now. The weather is cooling off just a bit and all the leaves are beginning to turn. Perfect weather to start walking off my extra bit of pregnancy weight! I guess there are some perks to having a summer pregnancy. Be sure to check out Lianna's blog soon too. Now that we're back to school she should be updating about once a week.

Dylan is here!!!

I went into labor around 11pm, Friday night. No forewarning of any sort beforehand, just like last time. Contractions started coming regularly by 12:30am. Damon was out and I finally got in touch with him and got him home by 2am. My wonderful friend and doula, Theresa was called around 6am and came over to check my progress. I was at about 2 centimeters and we made the decision to head up to Huntersville, about a 20 minute drive from our house, to deliver him at Presbyterian Hospital. Only thing we forgot - the camera.

The situation just didn't seem right for a home delivery. Our house was still massively out of order. We still can't find half the things we'd like to, there was a ton of laundry that needed to be done and no working dryer. By the time I got checked in, maybe around 7:30am, I was up to 4cm. Marcia, my midwife (who must have been surprised to see me since she knew we'd planned a homebirth), gave me some sort of sedative since I was beyond exhausted by that point, having been in labor for 8 hours and not having slept in 24. I caught little minute long naps in between contractions once that took effect for the next hour or so until I was transferred into the delivery room.

The transfer made my contractions really peak and for the next hour I was still reeling from the sedation. The room was spinning and it was hard to hold myself up in certain positions for a bit. Once the fog cleared though I had progressed to about 6cm. I eventually settled myself up on the delivery bed in sort of an all fours position which I never did get out of. I spent the next 2 hours probably like that, gripping my tummy with my right hand, clenching the bed rail or the bed itself with my left, biting down hard as I could on the bed itself through each contraction. Thank god Damon was behind me and far, far away from my teeth! His job (along with the nurses too from time to time) was to rub my back constantly through each contraction. I simply could not have gotten through it all without that.

I progressed pretty quickly after I hit 6cm. I could already feel my body pushing, though I don't think anyone else in the room was aware of that until very near the end. Marcia was delivering another baby by the time Dylan dropped way down into my pelvis and I'd begun to really push. Diane was the nurse who stayed through it all. I remember feeling Dylan's head lodge itself WAY down, nearly out suddenly and I reached down to see if I could feel him crowning. I felt his soft wet little head begin to pop out and noticed my belly was no longer there anymore either. Damon started yelling something about how he thought he saw him crowning and then I heard Diane say no, that wasn't his head.... then she started screaming into the intercom for Marcia to come NOW!!! She sounded frantic and very worried that she'd be delivering the baby. That made me start laughing on the inside since by that point there was no stopping him and I wasn't the least bit concerned who was standing behind me when it happened - my family was already there, all that mattered.

Marcia must have shown up at some point, I really wasn't aware of it and without my glasses I couldn't tell her from Diane or any of the other nurses either. I remembered feeling someone pull on the baby and I screamed for them to stop, that it was hurting me. Damon says that was Marcia. Two more pushes got Dylan's little head out into the big, big world. With one last push, the only one I actually had to work at and one big gush (my water must've finally broken) he slid out on to my legs and was born! Damon says he shot out like a bullet. Marcia and Diane caught him while Damon's hand was on him too. He had a lot of fluid in his lungs still, was all purpley and silent - Lianna was just like this so it didn't worry me, but everyone else seemed really concerned by it. I remember hearing them saying they needed to cut his cord, it was too short, etc. I started screaming and yelling at them at this point that NO! They were not going to cut his cord too soon! They did clamp it much sooner than I would've liked, but all my arguing slowed them down considerably too. Marcia cut the cord before Damon had the chance but Damon was the first to hold him.

I was so exhausted by this point that I couldn't move from where I was to really even turn around and look at or hold him. I think they were busy wiping him off and things like that on my legs still too so I couldn't move right away. Everyone else is busy right now so I'm not the one to write anymore on all this... seeing as I have no idea what really went on afterward... (I swear I will get the story out of em soon). One thing I do remember is delivering the placenta and then remembering that Lianna wanted very much for months now to have a poke at it. Marcia helped her get some gloves on I think and the two of them had fun exploring it. Later on that morning Lianna told Diane how dumb she thought it was that they'd taken away the placenta when they could have kept it and used it for something more practical.... like feeding lions at the zoo! We all thought this was hilarious and then talked about why it might not be such a good idea to feed lions human body parts. I said nah, they wouldn't want humans, only pregnant humans!

I was asked before they did anything to the baby which was such a wonderful, welcome difference from last time. We avoided nearly everything - no Hepatitis vaccine, no eye ointment, no vitamin K shots. The only "routine" stuff they did get away with was a syphilis blood test on me AFTER I had Dylan (they actually wanted to attempt a blood draw while I was in labor, wtf!) and a PKU so we could be discharged early.

So anyways... little Dylan Mathew Neri was born on September 27, 2008 at 11:20am. Weighed 7lbs, 9oz. 21 1.4 inches long. Has a head full of black hair. Is tongue tied but mildly so. This has been causing some real challenges so far with breastfeeding but today Damon and I met with an amazing lactation specialist at the hospital nearer our house who was just an angel. He's feeding like a pro now and the two of us both feel sooo much better for it. The stay at the hospital was sort of lousy. The staff was excellent, warm, compassionate. Can't complain about them. The freaking cafeteria on the other hand... not that the food was so bad, but the HOURS and the stupid rules! Ugh. First night I missed dinner, then the second day I was just totally underfed. I demanded an early discharge mainly for that reason alone (and my stupid uncomfortable bed).

So we are home. Got in around 9 or 10 last night. Feels so good to be settled back in and able to breastfeed. It's much harder with this lil guy than it was with Lianna, but not impossible like it seemed yesterday. Yesterday and this morning were so bad we were honestly contemplating formula. Damon's main thing he keeps saying is how perfect the delivery was. Things like textbook, beautiful, that he saw the Miracle of Life movie but this was just so much better. He says he wants to have 15 babies now. Haha, too bad I'm not making anymore. Anyways, I'm off to shower, eat & SLEEP again.

Love to all & more later!

38 Weeks and still waiting...

Yeah, I've been slacking on the updates, photos, and all that. Being this pregnant hurts dammit. I truly envy all those moms who pop out babies BEFORE 40 weeks. This lil guy doesn't seem to be wanting to go anywhere anytime soon though. Bleh.

In the Studio

Ok. First things first. OWEN FARMER was a joke. Man we had fun making everyone think we'd completely lost our minds with that one! It became this minor obsession too to see who would actually tell us how god-awful it was to our faces. Megan, I love ya girl... you alone stood out among everyone on that front.

We've always intended to name him Owen MATHEW. Just please don't tell me it's spelled wrong. Damon had a friend in high school who spelled it that way so he wanted to spell it that way too. I told him it was "ghetto" and then finally typed it in on the old google box and whaddya know... it's just the Aussie or Welsh version of the name. So meh. It's sort of growing on me. So now, it's photo time...

I love the photos I got to take with Damon and Lianna. That we got any at all of her not scowling and pouting is pretty amazing. Finally she got to be included in a photo shoot and she got all camera shy haha. I'm just about 33 weeks in these photos. I was super bloated yesterday though. I think I lost 5 pounds overnight, no joke. I suppose these are the "classic" shots people expect to see when you're pregnant. I like em. I'm glad I got some funkier ones too though. I'd like to do something out in the woods next... Jay of Charlotte Glamour took these in his studio at his house. Best part: we got all 130+ images on a CD and he's going to print us up an 8x10 of our choice.

Because all pregnant chicks hang out in places like this....

We trespassed into an awesome old rundown warehouse/office building on a boiling hot day last week with Sarah and her friend Lee to take these photos. The dust was formidable. Lianna took home a "20mph" speed limit sign she found inside. She had a blast. The heat on the second floor was insane. I'm completely drenched in sweat in all the photos of me in the blue dress - in places I didn't even know I could sweat! Yuck... but I do love the photos and Sarah was tons of fun to work with. She did my makeup too. You can check her other work out at Scarah ScrewdriveR

By the way... I may not have mentioned this, but you can click on most photos in this blog and it will take you to the complete gallery I have posted for them on Picasa.

Photos and a new midwife

I met Spencer of Pixelated Perceptions in Statesville to shoot these photos this past Tuesday. Wow, Statesville... what a weird redneck hick town. Like Buffalo-lite, architecturally speaking. Best part of the afternoon: When some bum tried hitting us up for change in the alley where water from an overhead gutter had been spraying me with its cool refreshing... wait, EW. Spencer started in with his "all I gots my camera..." shy thing so I jumped in and offered my hair brush and/or high heels (I did NOT walk around in those things people, I'm not that crazy. Somehow hot pink Crocs just didn't seem like the right "look"). He kept pushing us so I just kept insisting he'd LOVE my high heels... he finally took off heh.

And yesterday we all drove up to Yadkinville, NC to meet Amy, a midwife who's been delivering babies since I was 2 - that's since before the great state of NC saw it in their stunted "wisdom" to make midwives like her illegal. Wow. She was wonderful. Liked her a lot. She even delivers babies for the Amish and Menonites in her area (check out Yadkinville on a map - you'll see what I mean, the whole place felt very "PA" to me actually). She has this questionnaire she goes through with all of her clients. She asks basic stuff about health and family history. Then about smoking, alcohol, etc. She says she loves saying to the Menonites in their little bonnets stuff like "and you've stopped using the cocaine and crack now that you're pregnant too, right?"... just to see their faces go white. Haha, whatta lady.

I know it may be late in the game for me to be switching midwives but we had some issues lately with the original one that led to me basically flipping out and losing trust in her. Overall, Amy seems like a better fit for us too. I'm excited and happy about it. Hard to believe I'm just 2 and a half months away from having a beautiful little boy in my arms...

Pregnant Modeling

So at the urging of one of my friends, I posted a couple profiles on some modeling sites. Who knew that within 24 hours I'd already have a half dozen solid offers for photo shoots - crazy!

Here are some of the photos I took yesterday to put on my profile. Damon shot some, I shot some of them myself. I'm excited though - not doing it for money, just wanted some nice looking photos of while I'm pregnant since I don't plan on doing this ever again (I know, I know... I said that last time haha).

27.6.08

Nesting

Damon hates me. I'll start with that. But when I am finally done torturing him, he will be happy as can be. He's already incredibly pleased. This may work against me, however, since with every improvement I make to our abode, he becomes less inclined to feel like my nesting plans are necessary, and more inclined to believe I am just insane - which is 100% true, of course.

Already he's been subjected to moving every piece of furniture we own except for the kitchen table and computer desk. He's hung 3 shelves in our kitchen and in the midst of rearranging everything, mopped up underneath absolutely everything in the house. He even wrestled the wall-to-wall carpet we had in our bedroom up into the attic so we could have hardwood again. That was EPIC!

As for myself, I've been decluttering and giving him boxes by the day to drag up into the attic, sorting and organizing, and instituting a very nice Nazi-esque "Everything Needs a Place" policy. Dust is my mortal enemy. I even washed all the walls and baseboards while wheeling my bloat-bellied self around on our little ottoman.

But now that all of this has been accomplished, I get to DECORATE! Oh joy of joys. I tried to hack up some english ivy out of my yard and force it into a little pot so I could bring it indoors. Still waiting to see if my efforts dealt it the final death blow. I even concocted a PLAN to reupholster the ugly (yet COMFY) faded blue gingham couch I'm sick of looking at. Problem was of course, my stupid tiny little girl hands & tummy tumor wouldn't let me staple-gun the fabric to the damn couch. Damon did it all for me though! Muahahaha....

Now I just need some coordinating fabric to cover the cushions with so I can have my throws back. My next projects include hanging these flower paintings I've ripped from a cheap calendar up on our wall and turning this handsome STICK into a towel bar.

Guess which project Damon gets to do? He hates me. And my lousy stick.

The Name!

We've finally decided on a name: Owen Farmer Neri.
We'd been pretty settled on Owen for awhile now but had the hardest time coming up with a middle name we both liked. Farmer was originally put out as a joke but quickly grew on us the more we said it. There are a lot of things we both like about the name, so it's a win!

I'm days away from my third trimester and can't wait for this to be over. I'm still staying "slim" but I've gained over 15 lbs so I'm doing well with that. I've been nesting like mad the last 3 weeks and everyone here has been forced to go along for the ride. Consequently, our house looks amazing now.

One of the big things that had to get done in order for this top to bottom clean & rearrange of everything was to oust a guinea pig. That's right, Shredder had to go. Poor girl was being tormented by our older pig anyway so we found her a nice new home at a farm. An actual farm, not "the farm".

We spent a couple hours at Dawn's farm in SC and saw plenty of goats, 4 ponies, 4 horses, lots of chickens - the highlights of which were the "silkies" and the "Polish" rooster. Also an alpaca with snaggly teeth (he needed 'em filed down), ferrets, rabbits, sugar gliders, a black cat, a small red parrot, ducks, guinea fowl, and a yearling deer she had raised since just a day or two old when it's mother had been struck & killed by a car. At the end of our visit she helped Lianna up on one of her ponies and led her around bareback.

On the left is a Polish rooster and the right is an example of a silky. The silkies looked kind of like dinosaurs and even had shorter than average wings!

Other than that not much has happened. I'm trying to find some kids to watch in my home to make some extra money, maybe some pets to sit on my own too. We'll see what comes of my craigslist ads I suppose. I've been adding photos slowly but surely to our Photo Album, including weekly updates of my growing belly. I put these links up on the column to your left here too.

Oh - one of Damon's old girlfriends from high school found him on myspace recently so he's just discovered how cool it can really be to get back in touch with old friends on that site. I guess he's found some mutual friends from her page too. Yesterday he actually spent at least an hour on his myspace account. So let's everyone who has a myspace account go ahead and make fun of him over there now!

Baby Wishlist

Here is a wishlist of things for Owen. We don't want to get him plastic-type stuff from China or who knows where, just natural. The whole lead and toxins in baby toys and bath products and clothing thing is kind of scary so I've been looking at natural products online that are actually affordable... I'm also putting this up since odds are nobody here is going to be throwing us a shower since all our local friends are male haha. Anyways, for anyone who wants to get something, here's our list.

Recipe: Bubble & Squeak

So I originally had this as part of a traditional English (ok maybe it was Irish, who knows) breakfast when I was in Toronto one time. I didn't know what it was and always thought of it as "pea mash".
Anyways, yesterday as I was smelling bacon cooking in the oven I saw a jar of peas on the shelf in my kitchen and suddenly had to have it. Turns out Wikipedia has an entry all about traditional breakfasts so I was able to find out it's name there. The stuff is awesome. We modified this recipe:

Bubble and Squeak

Ingredients
450g/1lb potatoes, unpeeled
salt and pepper
70g/2 1/2 oz butter
250g/8oz cabbage, shredded
3 tbsp water
3-4 tbsp sunflower oil
1 onion, chopped

DIRECTIONS
Cook the potatoes for 25 minutes in a pan of lightly salted boiling water, then drain, peel and dice.

Place them in a bowl with 55g/2oz of the butter and mash until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, place the cabbage, water and remaining butter in a large heavy based saucepan and cover. Cook gently for 10 minutes, or until tender. Mix the cabbage and mashed potato together and season with more salt and pepper.

Heat half the oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the potato and cabbage mixture and press down with the back of a wooden spon to make a flat, even cake.

Cook over a medium heat for 15 minutes until golden brown on the underside and place on a large plate. Add the remaining oil and cook again on the other side for 10 minutes.

Transfer to a plate, cut into wedges and serve.

COMMENTS
You could add carrots, peas or brussels sprouts to this recipe if you wish. Just cook and add to the cabbage and mashed potato before cooking.

Note: As a kind reader pointed out, the traditional bubble and squeak recipe was a way of using up leftover vegetables, so you might want to wait until you have some leftover cabbage and potatoes rather than making it all up from scratch!

Mainly, I omitted the cabbage since I was ultimately too lazy (& hungry) to go out in this heat to the store just to get some and I used the bacon grease instead of oil to fry it in. Yum. Now to just find out about the strange name....

Recipe: Sushi Rolls

I made a sushi feast awhile ago & wanted to share the photos!
I used brown rice, carrot, cukes, cooked fake crabmeat sticks, and avocado for the rolls. These were all hand-rolled because we seem to have lost our bamboo mat in the move. Turned out just fine though. My only suggestions to rolling this way is not to overstuff and to keep the nori & your fingers moist at all times.

As for the rice, there are a lot of tips out there on how to make perfect authentic stuff but I can't be bothered & mine turned out fine. I even used the loathsome METAL BOWL with no trouble (recipes everywhere will tell you not to use one). They also say not to put it in the fridge but I was interrupted while making this & again, it was fine for an hour. Let's get on with it then...

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3 cups short grain rice
  • 3 1/4 cups water
  • 1/3 cup rice vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
Put vinegar, sugar & salt in a pan on low heat and heat until the sugar dissolves. Cool the vinegar mixture. Spread rice into a large plate or a large bowl. Pour vinegar over rice and mix it up. Let it cool and you're ready to roll!

Recipe: Spelt Pilaf (Vegan)

I'll be posting yummy recipes here to share.
Here's my first:

Spelt Pilaf

Ingredients:
1 cup Spelt Berries
1 Tb Vegetable Oil
1/2 cup Dried Onion Flakes
1/2 lb Fresh Mushrooms (washed and chopped)
2 cups Chicken (or veggie) Broth
1/4 tsp ground black Pepper
1/4 tsp dried crushed Thyme
1-1/2 Tb dried Parsley Flakes

In a large saucepan saute spelt and onions in oil 3-4 minutes. Add prepared mushrooms and saute 5 more minutes. Add broth and herbs and bring to a boil; reduce heat and cover. Simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until liquid is absorbed. If pilaf becomes too dry during cooking add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of hot water. Remove from heat; serve hot.

Variation: add 1/2 cup grated cheese shortly before removing from heat.

Lianna & I love this one. Damon doesn't like it at all. I used baby bella mushrooms and a half cup of diced onions that were sautéed first. We liked it so much we didn't even think to add cheese.

Welcome!

I've just created this blog to keep in touch with our family & friends and share photos! You can check out all our latest photos here.

Latest News:

Damon is working long hours, still out at the lake outside of town & thankfully not dropping dead from the oppressive heatwave (yet). He's got a nice tan now!

Lianna has just finished 1st grade! She got the highest marks possible for each quarter and exceeded her reading goal by so much that she was awarded a FREE 1-topping pizza from Domino's. She chose mushroom. We celebrated with ice cream sundaes. To give an idea of how much she's reading, she just finished The Witches by Roald Dahl... in a day. A 208 page book rumored to be about a 4th grade reading level from the author of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. Spooky stuff.

She really loves Star Wars & playing Zoo Tycoon. Something she can't do when her silly mother is writing a blog. Poor child. She's getting good at riding her scooter and is learning to jump rope well too. She'll be back down in Florida soon to visit her father during most of the month of July.

We are still awaiting the appeal for her to be transferred to another school for 2nd grade (our initial request was denied). My meeting with the principal of her school this year was abysmal. Actually, that might be too optimistic. Suffice to say, she accepted no blame for the problems we've had and even went so far as to suggest that Lianna herself was to blame. Classy.

As a result, I've begun looking into homeschooling options for her, which she is excited about. I'm more apprehensive than excited, but I think it will be just fine if we end up going that route. My main problem right now is deciding on & finding a curriculum... Ugh.

I am doing fine with the pregnancy. I'm 24 weeks along, have gained about 15 lbs and have been having terrific low back & hip aches most of the week. The kind that aren't alleviated by movement. Here's my most recent belly photo. I'll probably be updating these for everyone to see on a weekly basis.

The AC in our car quit cooling (along with a lot of other things that seem to have quit working on it recently) but so far I have been doing alright with the 100+ temperatures we've been getting for over a week now. Don't ask me how. I'm not sure yet either. I'm sure it won't last long enough to figure it out anyway.

I've also been busy cleaning & organizing our tiny house top to bottom for the last week or so now. I've been relentless. It's annoying. I know it's that nesting instinct preparing things for the baby and the results are fantastic, but I also sort of just want it to stop. I feel like a slave to my body's cleaning impulses!

The baby is also doing fine. About all that can be said about our lil guy is that he is still kicking like wild in there. Yesterday morning he had somehow managed to get himself positioned sideways inside my belly and was doing what I can only describe as dancing. Yes, dancing. In a very rhythmic fashion, he was kicking and then punching me on both sides of my stomach simultaneously. This went on for a good 10-20 minutes.

If he keeps it up, I might just give him some awful middle name like Dancer. You hear that baby? You'll be Tiny Dancer Neri if you don't settle down in there! Maybe he's just trying to convince me to take him to see Toubab Krewe tonight rather than sitting at home complaining about my sore back.

We've found a midwife for the homebirth also. She is wonderful. This Saturday we have an all-day homebirth class we are attending as a family that will break down the more nitty-gritty scary what-if scenarios and how to handle them in a homebirth situation - something Damon is really eager to find out more about. I'm most excited about meeting some other local homebirthing moms and pigging out during the potluck lunch afterwards. I'll be making one of mine and Lianna's favorites: Spelt Pilaf. Which reminds me, I think I may have a recipes section on here if I get around to it.

Love & Hugs to all!
